From anti-aging benefits to increased cognitive function, we all know there are a million reasons to drink up (head to this Healthline piece for all the benefits of hydrating). But how easy is it to hit those water goals every day?
Very easy, honestly.
I am a self-proclaimed beverage goblin and many years ago made a resolution to drink more water. Since then I have become a fully hydrated queen every single day. I stay chugging my water and can tell when I have a day without enough H2O. Looking for ways to increase your water intake? Some quick tips ahead…
Brighten Up
I love a freezing cold glass of ice water but sometimes I just need a little something different. I mentioned in my post about finding joy that I love to prep a little drink for the morning and while it's not an everyday thing it helps when I’m feeling blah about the plain stuff! Mix it up with flavors - it’s ok to be a little #watertok-y - and slurp down those water dops. It isn’t for everyone but I like filling my giant water cup to the brim and mixing in a packet of lemon drink mix and a splash of italian wedding cake syrup to make a lemon meringue pie kind of drink. It’s like a little treat midday! Want to skip the packets and syrups? Add a little lemon and basil or a cucumber to your water for a spa-like sip.
Space It Out
Don’t want to chug a ton of water right when you wake up? Ignore all those “biohackers” and fitfluencers that tell you to start the day with half a gallon of water or whatever. You are doing great. Take sips here and there throughout the day. Half a glass every hour or so will get you closer to your goals than you were before you drank half a glass of water, right?
But Also Don’t
Don’t want to space it out? No problem! Get ready to blast Shots by LMFAO and drink LOTS of water a few times a day. If you find yourself forgetting to drink up until late in the day, set reminders throughout the day and chug some water. I used to chug an entire glass of water ten times a day and then it became a habit to drink enough H2O.
Spell ICUP
I love a cute cup and you know I live my life in the pursuit of cute. If a good glass, bottle, or cup motivates you to actually use it then go for it! I don’t think we need to drop half a paycheck or throw elbows over the newest Stanley drop, but find what works for you. When I’m on the go I use a random screwtop water bottle that I got for free with my vitamins (I know, how chic) and at home I typically use a large deli container. Yes, a deli container. I bought a pack of 20 to freeze homemade soups and sauces in but found I loved them for water. Don’t yuck my yum! Looking for your next great glass? I love these retro cute juice glasses, a sippable bottle perfect for on-the-go, stadium cups that scream SUMMER, and a sweet lil tumbler.
Carry On
You can’t drink water if you don’t bring it with you. I have tried to make a real habit of being one of those people who lug a bottle of water everywhere they go. I keep a full reusable bottle of water in my car and try to bring it literally everywhere. Book club? I brought my water. Long line to vote at the local polls? Fine, I have a drink. My child’s baseball game? I brought a five gallon bucket from Lowe’s with a long crazy straw because I am staying HYDRATED.
It Ain’t Just Liquid
Let’s bend the rigid rules and be nice to ourselves! Remember that you don’t have to keep to plain water - you can drink decaf teas or eat high water content foods to help your bod hydrate. Watermelon, cucumbers, lettuce, the list goes on of the foods you can chew on to get more of those benefits. Take the Water Pressure Off
Don’t worry about lower water days. I aim for 150 ounces of water a day but everyone’s goals are different! Don’t be super rigid and remember it is just a drink. You don’t have to beat yourself up if you don’t drink enough water, there are plenty of other things to spiral about and sipping water doesn’t need to be one. Ever. You are doing great and, might I even say, you look radiant even on your most dehydrated day.
