Both of our families absolutely love board games, so we thought we’d bring you a joint post to share some of our current favorites!
Molly’s Picks:
Every year, I get each of my kids a game as their gift to open on Christmas Eve. This works out beautifully, because then we all usually play it as one of our main activities for that evening while we snack and chat. Here are some of the recently gifted games that have remained popular in our house.
Blokus: Starting out strong, this game is a hit with everyone in my spatially aware family. Sometimes the kids team up to “blokus Dad” because he’s the best player, but honestly, no man gets left behind with regard to skill level here, even my six year old can keep up and stands a chance to win, which always makes things better. It’s sort of like a 3D Tetris, but you want to block other people as well. It’s so much fun and can be played in a fairly short session, which makes it popular on school nights as well! Always time to squeeze in a quick game of Blokus!
Disney Trivia: Last summer, we had a rainy day at the beach, and the house we were staying in had Disney Trivial Pursuit. We played all day and loved it. But it turns out that buying Disney Trivial Pursuit is VERY expensive. This is the exact same thing without the price tag. There’s picture cards for younger kids and plenty of “tough” questions for adults. We’ve played this many times and never had the same question twice, so plenty of material to keep on trucking!
Rack-O: This is one I played as a kid and it turns out that my almost 10 year old daughter loves it as much as I did. She will play this one with me or one of her friends MANY times in a row. My six year old is a little young for it, but he’s getting there!
Disney Colorbrain: This is what I got for my daughter to open THIS Christmas Eve. Disney Trivia was such a hit - this is similar but with a twist. This is all about colors! The trivia tests whether you can remember the color of Princess Elsa’s eyes in Frozen or Woody’s vest from Toy Story. I can’t wait to break this one out on Christmas Eve!
Wicked Monopoly: It was a tough call between the Disney Colorbrain and Wicked Monopoly for my daughter this year. She LOVES Monopoly and this would be such a fun twist, given her love for all things Wicked. Perhaps I’ll cave and get her two games this year.
SkipBO: This has been one of our family’s favorites for quite some time. My six year old is JUST starting to get the hang of it and it’s great for the math skills he’s learning in first grade. We love to bring these cards on vacation with us and play a few rounds after dinner at the beach or while we’re camping.
Sarah’s Picks:
My family and I are HUGE board game fans and it's our favorite evening activity. As my kiddos get older its been a lot of fun to see what kinds of games they are interested in now and its been refreshing to graduate from rounds and rounds of Candyland. We are lucky enough to live pretty close to Critical Grind - a board game cafe where we can test out new (or new-to-us!) games for free, too, and we’ve found some real gems because of them! Such as…
Ticket to Ride: This is my personal favorite and my ten year old is always up for a trek across the country with me. We love to set this one up after dinner and it can take some time to complete your destinations so it’s a great strategy game to play, especially during that weird winter in between time of post-dinner/pre-bedtime.
Goosebumps Clue: A creepy twist on a classic! My oldest is officially in his Goosebumps books era and my youngest loves Clue now that my nephew played Mr. Green in the play this Fall. We stumbled upon a perfect blend of both recently and it’s an instant favorite - plus, I love that it teaches some problem solving.
Every version of Uno but this Jurassic World Uno Attack is our family favorite. At holidays we usually play some version of Uno with my kids’ grandparents and great-grandparents. There are endless versions of Uno now but Attack offers a lot of laughs and who doesn’t want a dilophosaurus spitting out cards at them?
Doomlings: Quirky and quick! This game skews a tiny bit older but is really fun to play. As a warning, this one has a bit of a learning curve and it took us a few games before we fully got a hang of the rules but now it’s a quick go to (and easy to pack for trips!).
We are both always on the hunt for new, fun games to play with our families so tell us, what’s YOUR favorite board game to play as a family??
