Hey, girl! March is Women’s History Month and there’s no better time to showcase some of our favorite female-founded and women-owned businesses that we love putting our dollars toward. As two women in business and running our own businesses, it feels vital to support our fellow ladies and theydies all year round and truly lift up the women around us, be it with advocating for them, supporting their businesses, championing them, or just cheering them on. Commence with the National Women’s Month celebrations!
We could talk about women in biz literally all day and sometimes as two PR ladies who represent A LOT of female leaders we actually do. To learn more about Women’s History Month, History.com has a great refresher with origins, facts, and quotes. Looking for more brands to support? This round up Best Products put together last year is a great resource. Some of our top women-led companies are below.
From Sarah:
Stay Bejeweled: A former client of mine, Made by Mary will always top my list! I raved about the brand in our Gifts for Grandparents guide and my heart still beats M-B-M. Their birth flower stacker necklace and their zodiac huggie hoop earrings are some of my favorite things in my jewelry organizer. Founded by a mom suffering from postpartum depression in 2013, Made by Mary truly shows that sometimes hardship creates beautiful things. Can we brag? We landed MBM on a great holiday segment on The View in 2019.
Take a Bite: XO Marshmallow is one of my favorite brands because they are so much fun, have a truly great product, and lean into social trends. They recently closed their Chicago marshmallow cafe but fear not! Their delish marshmallows and super cute merch are always available on XOMarshmallow.com (including my fave Mint Chocolate Chip OMG which helps make the perfect Shamrock S’more). XO is my go-to for client gifts, teacher gifts, and little treats for my fam. From the About Us: “XO Marshmallow is a company based on love, growth, and s'mores. We took the concept of marshmallows and turned the confectionery industry on its head with our innovative treats and Marshmallow Café. What started as each of us putting $100 into a bank account has grown into the nation's favorite marshmallow company. With Kat's food service experience and Lindzi's marketing background, we've maintained sustainable growth -- even during a global pandemic. We believe in putting in the hours, in building a brand that people not only love, but trust. We believe in our team, who works just as hard as we do to deliver an amazing product and experience. We believe in putting our customers first, and hope our demonstrated success makes you believe in us too.”
Bloom On: I have been planning a post about my Weekly Blooms tradition (aka I buy myself flowers every two weeks because I am my favorite girl) and you need to know I have a flower obsession. Farmgirl Flowers is one of my favorite birthday gifts to send to my lovergirls and once a colleague sent me one of these burlap-wrapped bouquets and oooh, it made my whole day. From a piece on NBC News “In 2010, Christina Stembel took $49,000, which was her entire life savings at the time, and put it toward starting Farmgirl Flowers, an online flower delivery company. She’s grown the business over the past 14 years without outside funding. Farmgirl Flowers works with growers across the country to source seasonal flowers and ships its signature burlap wrapped bouquets nationwide.”
Just a Little Word: Little Words Project not only offers on-trend friendship bracelets that we love adding to our ever growing arm party, but they began with a mission we really love. From the About Us: “After years of bullying, I started making bracelets in college for myself and my sorority sisters. The wearable affirmations reminded us of our worth, and got us through the tough times together. Ten years and millions of bracelets later, the Little Words Project™ community is living proof that kindness is a superpower. Thanks so much for being here, and remember: just be nice.” These affirmation-driven bracelets make for a great gift, treat yourself indulgence, and addition to your daily wardrobe. The LWP x Sad Girls Club collection is my favorite collab in a looooong time, full stop.
Hairing is Caring: If your social feed is anything like mine, Kitsch is all over the place…and for good reason! Founded by Cassandra Thurwell out of her apartment in 2010, the brand has gained massive popularity and retail presence (check out their brand story for more). Heatless curling tools, hair catchers for the shower, facial oils, and body wash, the company has really enhanced their product line and I cannot live without their microfiber scrunchies for those hair wash days. Ready to be impressed? Cassandra Morales Thurswell Named to 2025 CNBC Changemakers: Women Transforming Business List.
Smell Fresh: I said it half marathon training post and I’ll say it again, Megababe rescues more than my thick thighs (they also have the best brand name) and the new Coco Deo has me dreaming of being in a swimsuit soaking up the sun and smelling like an old school bottle of tanning oil. Yum. Clean, innovative, and vegan Megababe was founded by wonderbabe Katie Sturino to “make clean, cute body care products that really work to keep you comfy.” Looking to learn more about Katie? Entrepreneur did a fantastic feature about how she built a business based in positive self-image and plus-sized fashion.
Get Out of the House: The Sloomoo Institute is one of my favorite places to take my kids when we are exploring Chicago! It is sensory overload in a good way, so much fun, and manageable with multiple kids because of the small layout. My kids love being able to try all the different slimes and getting to create their own on the way out. Founded by Karen Robinovitz and Sara Schiller in 2019. They sell slime, slime kits, and more on their website but the experiential aspect is my fave.
From Molly (I apologize in advance that so many of mine are food/bev, but that’s kinda my main work world these days, so I’m obviously obsessed!)
Sip, Sip Slay: Some of my favorite tea and coffee to sip on is founded/led by powerhouse females!
Numi Organic Tea: Founded by Ahmed and Reem, a brother + sister Iraqi immigrant team, this is female-founded AND led, with Reem Rahim still at the leadership helm. Numi Teas are made only with organic, all-natural ingredients from a founding B Corporation member and a leading purchaser of organic, Fair Trade Certified teas. Numi's sales support their impact programs, which include food relief for high-needs families, educational support for underserved Oakland school children, and supplying clean drinking water for communities around the world that do not have access to it. (Our family’s fave is the Moroccan Mint - perfect for any time of day AND it tastes great iced in the summer - very refreshing!)
Sightglass: CEO Sharon Healy transitioned Sightglass to a women-owned and led company, and built built a leadership that is 50% women. Try their top seller: Organic Owl's Howl: Tasting notes of Cacao Nib, Stone Fruit, Candied Orange Peel, Roast Level: Medium Light.
Noodles You Need: Lotus Foods - Co-founded by Caryl Levine in 1995, this is Lotus’ 30th anniversary year - a wonderful milestone to celebrate for this female powerhouse. Our family adores the Organic Millet & Brown Rice Ramen. In addition to being gluten-free, millet and brown rice are some of the most nutritious and easily digestible grains.
Pecan Milk (yes, pecans!): PKN, founded by CEO Laura Shenkar, the first pecan milk brought to market. You can even buy it on Amazon and it’s delicious in coffee!
Put some butter on that toast: PACHA, co-founded by Madeleine Hamann - the pioneering brand in regenerative, allergen-free baked goods. Try theirSprouted Sourdough Buckwheat Bread: Just 2 simple ingredients - Sprouted Buckwheat & sea salt*! No sugar or seed oils!
Better than Nutella: Soom Foods was founded by three sisters and they provide some of the most delicious products. A jar of their dark chocolate sea salt tahini doesn’t last a full week in our house!
Candy without the Crap: Harken Sweets is a relatively new company, founded by Katie Lefkowitz, but she is a FORCE that is taking the world of candy by storm. Her snacks are higher in fiber, made without all the “yucky” stuff and taste delicious. I bought a box of the Nutty One for my kids’ Easter baskets this year.
Local Flowers on Demand: I have to take this opportunity to give a huge shoutout to one of my good friends here in Charlotte, NC, who JUST started her own business, The Polished Petal. Founded by Caroline Campbell to bring more beauty into the world, she offers custom floral arrangements, floral subscriptions and suggestions for every occasion. If you’re in Charlotte, look her up for Easter or any other special event you have coming up.
