We just ate Mardi Gras king cake and walked around with ashes on our foreheads last Wednesday, so that can only mean one thing: Easter is coming up. I thought I’d make some suggestions about the best things to fill the kiddo’s baskets with, besides jelly beans. Whether you're filling a basket for a toddler, a big kid, or a tween, here are my best age-appropriate ideas that will make Easter morning extra special.
Easter Basket Ideas for Toddlers (Ages 1-3)
Seasonally Appropriate Books:
When my babes were this age, the first thing I always looked for in Easter Basket stuffers was reading material! If you want to raise readers (like the ladies behind this here blog!), you have to start early and often. Here are a few fun ones that have been a hit in our house. You’ll notice Easter/spring themed books in each group, because for me, my kids love to have a box full of holiday-themed books that they haul out during certain times of year and spend an hour or so poring over:
Bright Baby Easter Touch & Feel (buy on Amazon)
That’s Not My Bunny (buy on Amazon)
Bath Time Toys!:
These always come in fun colors and are usually small enough to stack around a basket. It’s a super practical filler, as it will make each evening’s routine a little more entertaining for everyone. Here are a couple that would help motor skills and keep a toddler’s attention for a few minutes:
Suction Cup Toys (bonus: These come in an eggshell, which is VERY Easter-y) - (buy on Amazon)
Watering Can Tub Toy (buy on Amazon)
Outdoor Toys:
Because Easter IS the official start to springtime, I love to get my kids age-appropriate outdoor toys/gear for Easter to kick it off. Just gives ‘em more reason to be outside getting Vitamin D and exercise while they get better at problem solving. If you’ve never heard of or tried the 1000 Hours Outside Project, I highly encourage you to check it out. If you make it a habit to spend lots of time outside at this age, it will be a natural part of any kids’ routine as they grow.
Egg Shaped Chalk (buy it on Amazon)
Wagon (buy it on Amazon) - it won’t fit in an Easter Basket, but you could EASILY put the Easter basket IN the wagon and decorate it with eggs and the like. This little baby will make sure your toddler loves going on walks AND allow you to get more steps in.
Fun Edibles:
We don’t do a ton of candy at my house, but I try to find a few little edible surprises for my kids that they wouldn’t normally get. At this age, the options were much more limited, but I found a couple.
Individual bags of Annie’s Bunnies (Grahams + Cheddar) (buy on Amazon)
Pirate’s Booty - always a hit in our house!
Easter Basket Ideas for Preschoolers (Ages 4-6)
Seasonally Appropriate Books: for every age! Add to the collection.
Little Blue Truck’s Springtime (buy on Amazon)
The Super Duper-Duo Easter Eggscapade (buy on Amazon)
Happy Easter Mouse (buy on Amazon)
Plus maybe a DVD (yes, we still have TWO DVD players in our house and my kids get a DVD for many holiday gifts).
It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (buy on Amazon)
Some “stuff” to do with their hands:
This age group is perfect for little puzzles, Play Doh or Kinetic Sand. You can buy these in bright colors and fill their baskets with activities that will occupy them with or without adult supervision!
Easter Egg Play Doh (buy on Amazon)
Kinetic Sand Flower Pot (buy on Amazon)
Outdoor Toys:
See above! My kids get outdoor stuff every Easter. Here are some things that rocked this age group for us.
Gardening Tools (buy on Amazon)
Plasma Car (buy on Amazon) - my seven and 10 year old STILL use ours ALL. THE. TIME. Great investment.
Foam Pogo Stick (buy on Amazon)
Jump Rope (buy on Amazon)
Some fun edibles
Gum (buy on Amazon)
Bobo Oat Bars (buy on Amazon)
Easter Basket Ideas for Big Kids (Ages 7-10)
Seasonally Appropriate (wherever possible) Books
My 10 year old isn’t SO much into picture books anymore, but I usually just get her something I know she’ll like. These days, she’s really into her Kindle, so sometimes it will be a digital credit to pick something out! For the younger end of this range…
Happy Easter from the Crayons (buy on Amazon)
Crafts or “Alone Time” Activities:
For rainy Saturdays or times when we just need the house to be quiet, these kinds of gifts come in REALLY handy as the kids can get engrossed in them in their rooms!
Easter Bunny LEGO Kit (buy on Amazon)
Magna Tiles Mini Sets (buy on Amazon)
Taco Goat Cheese Pizza - Easter Edition! (buy on Amazon) - our family LOVES games and this one in particular seems to be a good fit for most of us. They continue to come out with awesome holiday sets, so I guess we’ll just keep indulging in the laughter!
Window Markers (buy on Amazon) - for some reason, my kids think it is GREAT fun to draw on our windows. Since I have made them responsible for cleaning them afterward as a condition of doing so, this is really a gift for me as it results in a free chore being done by the kids - window washing!
Outdoor Toys
Goggles (buy on Amazon) - since my parents have a pool and both my kids do swim team, we lose these a LOT so getting a new pair every Easter is NOT unrealistic or unnecessary.
Walkie Talkies (buy on Amazon) - my kids take these on walks and run ahead to message the other about suspicious mailbox activities. They also bring them all around our yard and have a blast chatting to each other from opposite sides of the house.
Upgraded Wheelbarrow (buy on Home Depot) - this has pretty serious load capability and is a LOT sturdier than some of the other “kid” wheelbarrows. We upgraded my son to this one for his 7th birthday and it has already seen a LOT of use.
Swimsuits (as above, we go through a LOT of swim gear and are in the pool from May-October) we LOVE the options from Land’s End and have found them to be reasonably priced (they are always having sales!) and durable.
My kids have “treat budgets” every month where they can indulge in sweet goodies. Sometimes I buy them something to try within this category (and they don’t always elect to spend a treat on it!), but sometimes I buy them things that are outside the “treat” realm. We all love dark chocolate, and a small square of it here and there for all of us does not “count” as a treat as the sugar count is low and there are great health benefits.
Hu is a great one! (buy on Amazon)
Pistachios are a great non-treat treat (buy on Amazon)
Easter Basket Ideas for Tweens (Ages 11-13)
Now we’re starting to get out of my direct expertise territory, as my daughter is still only 10! But here are some things I think she might still continue to like over the next couple of years!
Woobles Beginner Crochet Kit (buy on Amazon)
Owala Water Bottle (buy on Amazon)
Accessories for Their Marble Run (buy on Amazon)
Swim Gear - Goggles, Swimsuits and Flip Flops (buy on Old Navy)
OR
Fun Pool Float (buy on Amazon)
No matter their age, kids love a fun and thoughtful Easter basket! Whether you go for creative crafts, outdoor play, or personalized keepsakes, these ideas will make Easter morning extra special. Not ALL of these suggestions will actually fit IN the basket, but that’s usually not a problem with a little bit of creativity. Easter Baskets for Kids do not have to be stressful or full of candy.
